Description

1. Business Context

Wx Labs is a weather technology startup that designs innovative tools for environmental monitoring. Its first product, the WxStation Pro, combines traditional weather sensors with a panoramic sky-facing camera, allowing users to capture, analyse, and share detailed weather and sky data. While the company has some traction in research and professional markets, it is also entering the B2C segment with its Personal Weather Station, aimed at weather enthusiasts, outdoor communities, and sustainability-minded consumers.

2. Core Challenge

How can Wx Labs use social media platforms effectively to raise awareness, grow a community of personal users, and convert interest into sales for its Personal Weather Station, in a highly competitive and niche market? The key performance metric is to maximise the number of customers signed up to a per-order waitlist that can then be shown to investors to raise funds.

3. Objectives

Competitor Benchmarking (Digital Marketing Analysis): Research how competitors in the personal weather or smart home device space use social media to build awareness, trust, and conversion. (20% focus)

Platform & Algorithm Insights (Marketing Analytics): Analyse which platforms and content types (e.g., video, reels, tutorials, influencer collaborations) perform best for similar products, using available data and insights on engagement algorithms. (30% focus)

Content & Follower Growth Strategy (Social Media Planning): Develop a content strategy and growth plan that focuses on building an engaged follower base, generating pre-order waitlist signups, and encouraging user-generated content or product advocacy. (50% focus)

4. Deliverables

  1. Competitor Social Media Analysis – key findings on positioning, tone, and engagement strategies of similar tech brands.
  2. Platform Strategy – selection of target platforms (e.g., Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or other upcoming/unexpected platforms) and rationale based on audience insights.
  3. Content & Growth Plan – content calendar, sample posts, and follower growth tactics aligned with social media algorithms.
  4. Digital Campaign Proposal – actionable campaign ideas and sample creative direction.

If you’re planning to submit a proposal for this project, here are some pointers to help you secure this project and deliver well.

1. Competitor Benchmarking

After finding out who the competitors are, you can use this Competitor analysis framework with a focus on their social media strategies and communications.

Additionally, tools like Social Blade and BuzzSumo could add more insights and context.

2. Platform & Algorithm Insights

Apart from insights from your studies, you may find these resources useful to understand platforms' performance and algorithms: Hootsuite and Social Sprout

You could potentially have a look at Statista or Google Trends to spot seasonal interest in weather or sustainability topics.

3. Content & Follower Growth Strategy

Combine your insights using the AIDA Model and 4Ps to generate a tailored growth strategy, using social media (channels) to raise awareness about the product, create interest in its benefits, and build trust and desire to join the pre-order list.

5. Next Step

Prepare a short proposal (Project Proposal Guide) outlining your strategy to tackle this project. Your proposal helps you secure a place and a scholarship.
